[00:00:06.06] Hello. My name is Stefani, and I'm an instructor at Daniel's Music Foundation. I'm so excited to be teaching this activity to you.

 

[00:00:15.18] During this activity, you will learn how to identify the hook of a song, find the shape or contour of a melody, switch between eighth and quarter notes, and emphasize an accent. [00:00:53.85] All right, everybody. The song that we are moving and grooving to today is called “Music for a Sushi Restaurant”. We're going to start off by finding the hook of the song. The hook of the song is the part of the song that repeats the most often, and is the most memorable. I'm going to sing it a few times for you. And as I'm singing, I'm going to challenge you to try and find the rhythm of the hook. You can try singing it with me, clapping, or shaking your hands, as if you're holding a pair of shakers.

 

[00:01:24.30] The first time, I'm just going to sing it. And then the second time, I'm going to shake my hands.

 

[00:01:29.78] (SINGING) Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba. Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba.

 

[00:01:47.72] Did you get it? Let's try it together. 1, 2, 3, go.

[00:02:01.52] Awesome job. Now let's talk about the shape of the melody or as we like to call it in music, the contour. The shape or the contour of the melody tells us which direction the melody is going. Is it going up? Is it going down? Zigzag or in a circle? [LAUGHS]

 

[00:02:25.36] I'll sing the melody of the hook again, and I'll ask you to think about where the melody is going. Are you ready?

 

[00:02:31.75] (SINGING) Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba. You're so right. The melody is going down. To illustrate the shape of the melody, let's shake our hands from up to down to the rhythm of the hook. Are you ready? Let's raise our hands. 1, 2, 3, go.

 

[00:02:59.45] (SINGING) Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba.

 

[00:03:06.74] Let's try it one more time.

 

[00:03:08.51] (SINGING) Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba.

 

[00:03:17.03] Now this song is super groovy. So if you feel like you just want to move a little more and groove a little more, you can definitely shake your hands a little bit faster as we're going from up to down. We're still outlining the direction of the melody, and we're still emphasizing the rhythm. We're just shaking our hands a little bit faster.

 

[00:03:43.97] All right, everybody. The melody, sometimes, has to come up to go back down again. So what we're going to do for this part is we're going to raise our arms up to the melody. We're going to go 1, 2, 3, oh. Let's try it one more time. 1, 2, 3, oh. Exactly. Awesome work.

 

[00:04:09.67] Now let's move on to the verse of the song or the part of the song that tells the story. Since this song takes place in a sushi restaurant, how about we roll a few sushi rolls? We'll be rolling our hands to eighth notes or notes that have us counting to, you guessed it, the number eight. I'm going to roll my hands and count to eight on each side.

 

[00:04:34.76] Let's do it together. Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, switch. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Gorgeous job. Let's do that without stopping. Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Wonderful job.

 

[00:04:57.03] Now let's move on to some quarter notes. This time, we'll be counting to the number four, and taking it a little slower. For each quarter note beat, I'm going to be extending my arms back and around my body, as if I'm handing all my friends a yummy plate of sushi. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. That was incredible.

 

[00:05:33.31] We are so close to finishing this activity. You're doing an incredible job. The only thing left is to prepare for a few surprises or as they're called in music, accents. Sorry, did I surprise you? Accents and music are notes that are played with a bit more power than other notes.

 

[00:05:55.05] Throughout the song, I encourage you to follow along with me as I move to hit those accents. Sometimes, I'll be rolling my arms from low to high, and then stretching them as high as I can for the accent. And other times, I'll just raise my arms for the accent.

 

[00:06:11.10] Let's practice. I'm going to give you a few accents, and I want you to try and catch them with me. Ready? Accent.

[00:06:21.68] Accent. Accent. Incredible job. Really nice catching those accents.

[00:06:40.17] All right, everybody. Let's go grab some sushi. We're going to start off by just feeling that music in our bodies. You can move in whatever way feels good for you. And then we're going to go to our hook with our hits, bringing our arms above our heads. Are you guys ready?

 

[00:06:56.77] Here we go. Shake, shake down. Shake down. Shake down. Now we're at our verse, let's roll. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Beautiful. These are our eighth notes. And then accent is coming up. Raise. Beautiful job. Keep rolling. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Switch. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Beautiful.

 

[00:07:23.59] And now let's give out that sushi. These are our quarter notes. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. Now bring your arms down. We're going to anticipate that filled up. Bring your arms up above your head for that hook.

 

[00:07:40.30] Are you guys ready? Here we go. 1, 2, 3, 4. And shake it out. Woo. Beautiful. Shake down. Shake down. Bring it up. Woo. Shake. Shake down. Shake down. Shake down. Beautiful.
