Cha-Cha Slide: Dance Break With Juliana

[DESCRIPTION] A title screen featuring the silhouette of a woman with long hair and her hands in the air, in front of a pink circle which reads “Dance Break with Juliana”. The screen fades away, and we are greeted by a woman with long hair in front of a colorful disco-patterned background. She is wearing a red T shirt underneath a black button-down.

[00:00:08.72] Juliana: Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Dance Break. I'm Juliana and I'm a firm believer that anyone can dance, but that nobody can dance like you can. If you enjoy these videos and would like to see more of them, please click the Subscribe button below to help us grow our channel. All right, my friends, let's get started.

[00:00:29.78] Juliana: On this episode, I will be joined by Ned, another amazing member of our community who will inspire you to let loose and get in touch with the dancer inside of you. Ned has taken in-person group classes at DMF. He is also a regular attendee of our virtual dance parties, and often performs at our virtual open mic nights.

[DESCRIPTION] Quick video clips of a young man with glasses and dark hair, performing at various DMF virtual live events. He is shown holding a yard stick like a guitar, using a microphone, and dancing.

[00:00:52.04] Juliana: During this episode, we're going to be doing a very popular group dance called the "Cha Cha Slide." We're really fortunate because the dance moves are actually in the lyrics. For example, the singer is going to say to the left, that's our cue to either slide, move, or even look to the left. I will be using my arms as well as my legs to help illustrate the different dance moves.

[00:01:21.80] Juliana: Now there's a couple of times that the singer is going to say, turn it out. Some people feel really comfortable doing a full body turn, while others may feel that puts them a little bit off balance. If you would prefer not to do a full body turn, you could try rolling one hand over the other or putting one or both arms in the air and bringing them around in a circle. This is a move commonly known as the washing machine.

[00:01:55.03] Juliana: Ned and I will be doing the dance moves that go along with the lyrics, but you should feel free to use the moves that work best for you and your body. Remember, enjoying music through dance may look different for everyone. And that's OK because there's no right or wrong way to enjoy a dance break. English ballerina Margot Fonteyn said, "Great artists will always find a way to be themselves in their art no matter what." Now let's have some fun and get funky, funky, funky, funky, funky, funky. Ned, thank you so much for agreeing to appear on Dance Break.

[DESCRIPTION] We are shown the young man from the previous clips. He is wearing a red shirt that says “Just Call Me By My Name”, and is standing in front of a large painting and several book shelves.

[00:02:36.70] Ned: It's an awesome opportunity and a privilege to be here.

[00:02:42.05] Juliana: Well, it's an honor to have you. Can you tell our viewers what you like most about dance?

[00:02:50.80] Ned: Dancing and being able to show the world what I got.

[00:03:03.04] Juliana: Ned, I love that answer. And trust me, the world needs more of what you have to give. Now I have one more question for you. Are you ready to rock and roll?

[00:03:15.01] Ned: And I have one answer to that. Oh, yeah.

[00:03:21.34] Juliana: Awesome. Let's do this. All right, everybody, now you know I love to get started with just feeling that music.

[00:03:29.22] [DJ CASPER, "CHA CHA SLIDE"] We're going to get funky, funky.

[00:03:32.68] Juliana: Yeah, Ned. I see you're getting real funky over there.

[00:03:36.94] (SONG AUDIO) Everybody clap your hands. Clap, clap, clap, clap your hands. Clap, clap, clap, clap your hands. All right now, we're going to do the basic step, to the left. Take it back now, y'all. One hop this time. Right foot, let's stomp. Left foot, let's stomp. Cha cha real smooth.

[DESCRIPTION] Ned and Juliana perform the dance moves as they are repeated. This continues throughout the entirety of the song.

[00:03:58.30] Juliana: Forward and back. Go, Ned. Go, Ned.

[00:04:01.48] (SONG AUDIO) Turn it out. To the left. Take it back now, y'all. One hop this time. Right foot, let's stomp. Left foot, let's stomp. Cha cha now, y'all.

[00:04:56.36] Juliana: All right, get low. Yeah, Ned, getting low over there.

[DESCRIPTION] Juliana and Ned crouch lower and lower, as they continue to alternate their shoulders up and down to the beat.

[00:05:01.48] (SONG AUDIO) Oh, yeah. Come on, cha cha now, y'all.

[00:05:07.07] Juliana: Forward and back. Forward and back.

[00:05:10.16] (SONG AUDIO) Turn it out. To the left. Take it back now, y'all. Five hops this time.

[00:05:17.00] Juliana: One, two, three, four, five.

[00:05:19.67] (SONG AUDIO) Right foot, let's stomp. Left foot, let's stomp. Right foot, again. Left foot, again. Right foot, let's stomp. Left foot, let's stomp. Freeze. Everybody clap your hands.

[00:05:36.46] Juliana: Go, Ned. Go, Ned. Go, Ned. Go, Ned. Get funky, get down. Go, Ned. Go, Ned. Go, Ned. Go, Ned. That was excellent work, everyone. Ned, did you have a good time?

[00:05:53.76] Ned: I had an amazing time.

[00:06:03.49] Juliana:  Awesome. Well, you did a fantastic job. Great work. Thank you for taking the time to dance with Ned and I. I'm proud of you for taking a few moments out of your day to do something good for your body, your mind, and your soul. I hope you had as much fun as I did.
