She was an author and civil rights activist who was mute at the age of 8 for five years after a tragic event.

During this period of silence Angelou developed a love for books and literature.

She is best known for her acclaimed 1969 memoire “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.

Her honors include a Pulitzer Prize nomination, a Tony Award nomination and three Grammys for her spoken word albums.

Angelou served on two presidential committees and received many awards including a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
