Harriet Tubman, born c.1820-1913

She was an abolitionist and activist who suffered from epileptic seizures and other injuries due to violence early in her life.

Born a slave in the early 1800s, Tubman’s early life was full of hardship.

The physical violence she endured caused permanent injuries, seizures, and narcoleptic episodes.

After the hardship of losing her 3 sisters to slavery, her mother was able to prevent the sale of her youngest brother, which set a powerful example for Tubman.

Named Araminta, she changed her name to 'Harriet' when she married John Tubman, to honor her mother.

In 1849, Tubman escaped to freedom in the North to become a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad.

In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law declared that escaped slaves could be captured in the North.

In response to the law, Tubman re-routed the Underground Railroad to Canada, which prohibited slavery.

Between 1850-1860, she lead over 300 people, including her family, from slavery to freedom, earning the nickname “Moses” for her leadership.

Tubman also helped the Union Army during the American Civil War, working as a spy among other roles.

After the Civil War ended, she dedicated her life to helping former slaves and the elderly.

Widely known and well-respected while she was alive, Tubman became an American icon in the years after she died.
